ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery)

ERAS is a combination of interventions which have been shown to improve and accelerate patient recovery after bowel surgery.  The ERAS protocol is a combination of pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative interventions.  For example, patients are allowed to drink clear fluids up until a few hours before surgery, can eat regular food after surgery, have assistance with physical activity to promote early mobilization after surgery, and are on optimal pain management strategies.  The ERAS protocol was adopted at HSN a few years ago and is now standard of care for our colorectal patients.
